Several observational studies have reported lower mortality among people whose BMI falls in the overweight range. This is often called the obesity paradox.
Standard BMI categories are useful for managing disease risk. Class II or higher obesity, abdominal obesity, blood pressure, blood sugar, and blood lipids still matter.
Mortality studies, however, have sometimes found survival advantages in slightly higher BMI ranges. In illness or recovery, very low weight can be a disadvantage.
BMI is based only on height and weight. It does not account for muscle mass, fat distribution, waist size, blood pressure, blood sugar, or daily habits.
